Swedish Medical Center: Thoracic Surgeon

The Division of Thoracic Surgery and Interventional Pulmonary Medicine at The Swedish Cancer Institute/Swedish Health Services in Seattle, Washington is seeking a board certified/eligible General Thoracic Surgeon.

Our team consists of 5 general thoracic surgeons (1 retiring in 2020), 2 interventional pulmonologists and 4 ARNPs. We provide general thoracic surgical care for the Swedish Health Care System in the greater Seattle area and serve as the quaternary referral center for the Providence Health System in the Northwest. Our referral base outside of Seattle and Washington State includes Northern Alaska to Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Our practice encompasses all aspects of general thoracic surgery except transplantation and trauma.  This includes a large volume of pulmonary, mediastinal and pleural disease but also a thriving practice of benign and malignant esophageal and gastric disease. Surgical approaches include open, VATS, robotic and endoscopic. The successful applicant will need to be well trained and versed in these areas of thoracic surgery and willing to primarily care for these patients. A particular focus in minimally invasive esophageal and gastric diseases is preferred.

In addition to clinical care, the successful candidate will be expected to provide education to our surgical trainees that include: two MIS fellows (one each in advanced GI surgery and thoracic surgery) and the general surgery residents from the Swedish General Surgery residency program. We also expect participation in our robust clinical research program that focuses on new technology, clinical outcomes and national cooperative group trials. Historically, we have published 10-15 peer-reviewed papers each year. We typically mentor one to two full-time clinical research fellows per year.

The Swedish Health Care system includes 5 hospitals in and around Seattle and is now a member of the Providence Health Care Systems. Swedish Thoracic Surgery provides the majority of care at the First Hill Campus and also supports care at our Edmonds and Issaquah Campuses.

Interested applicants should send their curriculum vitae and letter of interest to Dr. Alex Farivar at alex.farivar@swedish.org.
